Obtaining a Real Estate License aaaaaa

California Real Estate License Prerequisites include:

  • Age- You must me at least 18 years old
  • Residence – You must reside within the U.S. (If you are not a California resident, there are special circumstances for out-of-state applicants.)
  • Experience – None required.
  • Education – You must successfully complete the following courses before you can schedule and take the California State Exam.
      • Real Estate Principles - 1523-94
      • Real Estate Practice - 2410-06
      • And one of the following:
        Legal Aspects of Real Estate - 3192-10
        Real Estate Finance - 2011-04
        Property Management - 3008-08
        Real Estate Economics - 3228-10
        Real Estate Appraisal - 2383-06
        Real Estate Office Administration - 3166-09

What if I did not complete the education requirements before October 1, 2007? If you did not pass the state licensing exam OR if your license application was not postmarked or submitted in person to any DRE office before October 1, 2007, you will be required to include evidence of all three required courses before your four-year license can be issued. 


State licensing exam applications that have proper evidence of successful completion of the three required courses will entitle you to take the examination. Once you pass, you can apply for your four-year license.


When do I apply for the real estate license exam? You will need to provide evidence of completion of all three required courses (Real Estate Principles (1523-94), Real Estate Practice (2410-06) and one additional course) before you can schedule your exam.


Where do I get an application for the exam?  You can download the license exam application from the California Bureau of Real Estate (BRE), formerly known as Department of Real Estate and set your date for the state exam.


When should I apply for my real estate license? Once you have successfully passed the California real estate license exam, you will get a license application; this must be submitted to and approved by the California Bureau of Real Estate (BRE), formerly known as the Department of Real Estate (DRE). If you have completed all three real estate classes (Real Estate Principles (1523-94), Real Estate Practice (2410-06) and one additional course), submit transcripts with your license application. You will be required to provide evidence of completion of all three required courses before your new license can be issued.


The application must be completed and returned, along with the appropriate fee and real estate license requirements (fingerprints, residency information, etc).


How long is my license good for?  California real estate license are issued for a four-year period and will need to be renewed prior to the expiration date.


Note: When you renew your license, there will be continuing education requirements to fulfill.


How can I renew my real estate license if it’s expired? If your California real estate license expires, you have the opportunity to renew it up to two years after the expiration date. However, you cannot perform real estate activities that require a license until you pay the late renewal fees and file an application. You must also satisfy all continuing education real estate classes within four years of filing the application
